Everyone from Stacey Dash to Republican pundits have something to say about Jay-Z and Beyonce’s recent trip to Cuba and the rapper is finally speaking up in their defense.
He addresses the controversy through music, like he and his wife often do, in his new song, “Open Letter.” The aggressive diss track isn’t aimed merely at critics of their Cuba trip but also folks trading rumors about Jay-Z selling his minority share of the Brooklyn nets.
In reference to Cuba, Jay-Z raps: “[he] done turned Havana into Atlanta.” He blasts politicians, saying: “Politicians never did sh-t for me/except lie to me, distort history.”
He addresses those who want to punish him for the trip, rhyming: “They wanna give me jail time and a fine — Fine, let me commit a real crime/Might buy a kilo for Chief Keef, out of spite, I just might flood these streets.” Chief Keef is the young rapper who is known for glorifying Chicago’s gun violence epidemic and is currently on probation from gun charges. He was recently released from a juvenile detention facility after serving 60 days for violating that probation.
Jay also drops President Obama’s name with the line: “Obama said, ‘Chill you’re going to get me impeached’/ You don’t need this sh-t anyway, chill with me on the beach.”
Interesting.
Of his plans to start a new sports agency and sell his share of the Nets, he says: “I woulda moved the Nets to Brooklyn for free/Except I made millions off you f–king dweebs/I still own the building, I’m still keeping my seats/You buy that bullsh-t, you better keep your receipts.”
Swizz Beatz produced the track which also features Trey Songz singing opera in the background and Hot 97’s programming director Ebro Darden delivering the line “you got scanners/we got scanners.”
